Want to root your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and get rid of some of that annoying bloatware Samsung puts on the phone? I don’t blame you. I’m pretty vocal about my disdain for the majority of custom UI’s that manufacturers put on their devices in an effort to make their phones a bit different than the rest of the Android phone world. I get the need, sort of, but it generally just slows down the phone and has some questionable design choices comic sans font? really?. If you feel the way I do, don’t worry, there is a solution. If you root your Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, you can then remove some of the bloatware manually, or even take it one step further and flash a custom ROM aka an entirely new version of Android onto the phone. Don’t be intimidated either, thanks to Odin and some crafty developers over on XDA, it’s a pretty straight-forward affair so long as you have one of the supported models. Ready to get started? Here’s how to root the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Before You Begin This will erase the phone, so backup anything you don’t want to lose before getting started. This tutorial requires Windows as the Samsung flashing software, Odin, is for Windows only. You need to know what model of the Galaxy S6 Plus you have as this will only work on specific versions and the kernel we use to root the phone is specific to each model as well. Head to Settings > About Phone and write down the model number for reference later. For a list of currently supported models, check the developer’s page here. Enable OEM Lock and USB Debugging Before we root the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, we need to perform a few actions on the phone to get it ready. Go to Settings > About Phone and tap on Build Number repeatedly until it tells you you are a developer. Tap Back and tap on the new Developer Options that appeared. Scroll down and turn on USB Debugging and turn on OEM Unlocking. Root the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Now that we have the setup on the phone out of the way, we can begin flashing the rooted kernel onto the phone to gain root access. Download the Required Files Download Samsung’s firmware flashing software, called Odin, and save it to your desktop Odin Download Download the rooted kernel for your specific model number from the developer Auto-Rooting Kernel Put the Phone into Download Mode Turn off your device. Turn it back on by holding down Power, Home, and Volume Down and keep holding them until you get the download mode screen. Plug the phone into the computer via USB. Root the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus by Flashing the Kernel Right-click on the Odin file you downloaded earlier and click Open As Administrator. When it opens, you should see Added in one of the slots indicating that it can see the phone. If not, please head to my how to setup ADB tutorial to just install the drivers, then unplug the phone and plug it back in and see if that fixed it. Click AP in the toolkit and select the SpaceX kernel . file then click OK. Click Start and wait for it to flash. Update SuperSU After that, the phone should reboot. Open the SuperSU app that is now in your app drawer and it should prompt you that it needs to update the binaries. If it does, let it, if not, then you are all set. All set. You can now do this tutorial from XDA and flash a custom recovery image. After that, head to my ROM repository and use that to flash a custom ROM until you find one you love. Let me know how this worked out for you in the comments below!
Thanksto a new root utility called PingPong Root from developer idler1984, almost all variants of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge can now be rooted without tripping the KNOX counter. And yes, that even includes the AT&T and Verizon Wireless models, whose locked bootloaders have prevented other root methods from working.
